As I read Sally Rooney’s new novel Beautiful World, Where Are You, I am increasingly interested in the stories two main protagonists Alice and Eileen. So, I created the scatterplot below to explore which words in the novel correlate most strongly with each character–alone and together.
To explore for your self, simply roll over the triangles on the chart where you will see one correlation coefficient for each character. That number refers to how statistically strong the word relates to Alice and/or Eileen. A week correlation is -1, 0 is neutral, and 1 is very strong.
Right away, I saw that the words “leaning” and “hands” correlate strongly for both characters. As I continue reading, I will be on the lookout for how those words appear and what insight the words’ usage might reveal about the characters.
Go on: explore the data for yourself! And tell me what you think on social.
